OTTAWA, January 28, 2016 – The Information and Communication Technology Council (ICTC) is excited to announce a partnership with Blippar, the world’s leading visual discovery browser and augmented reality app.

Blippar is the first visual discovery browser using augmented reality technology and artificial intelligence to transform how people connect with the world and to turn the world into an interactive learning environment. When people are curious about objects or brands, they blipp them, and they instantly discover useful and entertaining content on their mobile device. Ultimately, AR is the way of the future, as it is rapidly impacting sectors all across the world by allowing for efficient and ground-breaking access to endless information!

Working closely with Blippar, ICTC aims to create interactive learning in schools across the nation. ICTC intends to use their app as a medium for their ongoing, the Future of Interactive Learning initiative (FOIL), funded by the Canada Media Fund (CMF). The program is bringing AR into high school classrooms, teaching students to engage with AR, while exploring innovative means of telling Canadian stories. Ultimately, the students will be using AR to creatively commemorate Canada’s 150th birthday in 2017. This initiative is projected to use Blippar to change the game of education by helping create a modern, efficient and interactive classroom.

Namir Anani, President and CEO of ICTC said: “We are thrilled to have an innovative company like Blippar on board for the launching of our AR pilot program. Seeing as only one out of every twenty ICT jobs are held by youth currently, it is our aim that this partnership will help youth gain indispensable skills that will foster innovation and advance them in the ICT sector. Training young Canadians to fill the digital jobs of the future is extremely important, as innovative talent is critical to growth and success of the Canadian economy.”

Colum Elliott-Kelly, Head of Education said: “Our partnership with ICTC aligns perfectly with Blippar’s vision for Education, which aims to turn the world into an interactive learning environment starting in the classroom. By empowering educators and students to design their own interactive learning experiences, we are creating together an immersive, engaging and unforgettable experience that will teach the students long-lasting digital skills while they learn about Canadian history.”
