OTTAWA, ON – September 12, 2018
Today the Information and Communications Technology Council (ICTC) launched an innovative tool to equip Canadians with in-demand digital skills needed to succeed in the global economy. The Digital Literacy and Skills Roadmap will act as a guide for anyone seeking to build digital literacy through one of three featured pathways: Educational, Occupational and Personal.
“Transformative technologies continue to radically change the face of business in Canada while intensifying the demand for skilled digital talent,” said Namir Anani, ICTC President & CEO. “With the rise of the data economy and the changing nature of work, the need to prepare Canadians for tomorrow’s jobs has never been more critical for Canada to heighten its competitive advantage on the global stage. ICTC’s labour market foresight points to the demand to fill 216,000 critical ICT positions by 2021, and job growth in ICT is outpacing the overall economy by 6 to 1.”
The Digital Literacy and Skills Roadmap is the latest tool initiated by ICTC’s National Taskforce on Education and Skills. Previously the task force launched ICTC’s #ICT4ALL, an online database of ICT resources and tools that will provide Canadians with learning opportunities needed to drive Canada’s economic growth and innovation.
Users of the Roadmap will select a learning pathway to discover the abilities and skills associated with each stage of digital learning from the novice user to the digital leader.
- Educational Pathway: Individuals will acquire digital skills through formal education/training
- Occupational Pathway: This path introduces digital competencies through experiential learning
- Personal Pathway: Digital literacy is developed for use in everyday life (i.e. Internet of things or connected cars and homes)
