5G is bound to be a major focus of Mobile World Congress 2019, taking place in Barcelona Feb. 25-28. But some analysts are still warning that the industry may be building up too much hype too early. It is expected telecommunications manufacturers trotting out 5G infrastructure, modems, and other hardware at MWC 2019. Technology vendors will also be touting peripheral technologies that either support 5G infrastructure or are made possible by its deployment.

British media reports say the U.K. National Cyber Security Centre has concluded that with care and safeguards, Huawei equipment can be used in “5G” networks, amid pressure from the United States to ban the Chinese supplier. If Britain gives Huawei a cautious green light, it will allow Canada room to make an independent decision, said Wesley Wark, an intelligence expert who teaches at the University of Ottawa.

In a news release, the company billed the initiatives, which include adding 200 high-paying R&D jobs, as a “commitment to Canada” and Huawei’s telecommunications partners. Huawei pledged to boost R&D investments by 15 per cent from a $180 million commitment in 2018, and says it will revise practices to ensure all intellectual property generated in collaboration with Canadian institutions remains in Canada.
