The Information and Communications Technology Council (ICTC) has announced a three-year project in partnership with the industry and associations, academic institutions, and policy makers to ensure the availability of timely, relevant and specific labour market information and forecasts for the digital economy. This initiative will assist Canadians to find and prepare for skilled jobs in the ICT sector. Nearly 60,000 jobs will be created in the next several years in emerging fields such as mobile, apps, cloud, and automation and robotics, adding to the 106,000 jobs that were expected to have been created between 2011 and 2016 in traditional ICT sectors. ICTC’s new web tool will provide accurate forecasts and make finding those jobs – and preparing for them with training – accessible to everyone.
The Honourable Jason Kenney, Minister of Economic and Social Development, today commented on this initiative saying: “Our Government’s top priority is creating jobs, economic growth and long-term prosperity. That is why our Government is committed to addressing the paradox of too many Canadians without jobs in an economy of too many jobs without Canadians. This project will provide better labour market information in the information and communications sector so we can ensure that Canadians have the skills they need for the jobs that are available today and into the future. ”

The “CareerConnect – Connecting Canadian Youth with High-Demand ICT Jobs in High-Demand Fields” project provides qualified employers with a wage subsidy to help offset the cost of hiring a graduate.

The Information and Communications Technology Council finds that 64,100 are now employed within the apps economy, nearly 25% higher than in October 2012.
The report, which is based on survey, secondary data and interviews, finds that the number of people employed in the development of apps has grown by nearly 25% since the Council released a first report in October 2012. Enterprises developing apps are generating $1.7 billion in revenue per year – expected to reach $5.2 billion by 2019.
The lion’s share of apps development is occurring in Ontario, where 28,700 are employed in developing apps (both technical and non-technical workers). Quebec is another hub of activity with its 14,000 apps jobs.

The Information and Communications Technology Council (ICTC) and MediaSmarts has released a summary of their February 10 event, Youth and Digital Skills Symposium: Preparing young Canadians to make social, economic and cultural contributions. It describes, as were heard at the event, the opportunities, challenges and proposed next steps to ensuring the highest digital literacy and skills among Canadian youth.

Showing their commitment to strengthening tomorrow’s workforce, leading organizations across Cape Breton gathered at Riverview Rural High School’s IT Fair, where Information and Communication Technology Council’s (ICTC) Focus on Information Technology (FIT) program has launched officially in Nova Scotia.
Riverview Rural High School (RRHS) is the first high school in Nova Scotia to enter into a formal agreement with ICTC. It joins other FIT schools across Canada integrating effective classroom technology required for 21st century learning and teaching.
