CyberTitan is a Canadian cyber security education initiative that promotes education and awareness in technology education
Ottawa, ON – The National Competition Finals for CyberTitan, a Canadian cyber security education initiative delivered by Information and Communications Technology Council (ICTC) took place in Fredericton, NB May 16th. Ten teams of middle school and high school students across Canada competed in CyberTitan after CyberNB’s National Cyber Youth Summit that began on May 15.
The first of its kind in Canada this year, CyberTitan is focused on promoting technology education awareness and fostering excellence in students pursuing careers in cyber security or other science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) areas. It seeks to prepare the next generation of students with skills necessary to protect our governments, industries, and individuals from global cyber security threats.

CyberTitan is offered in alliance with the [US] Air Force Association’s CyberPatriot program and in partnership this year with Opportunities New Brunswick, CyberNB, IBM, and the NB Ministry of Education and Early Childhood Development with funding in part by the Government of Canada.

The competition began with 92 CyberTitan Teams (500 cyber ninjas) vying to earn 1 of 10 coveted spots for an all-expenses-paid trip to compete in the first ever CyberTitan National Finals in Fredericton, NB. Not only were our CyberTitan teams competing against each other for a spot in the Canadian CyberTitan finals, they were also competing against approximately 5,000 teams across North America for the CyberPatriot finals that took place in April.
After spending more than 18 hours competing over 4 months while also learning practical and important technical, business and cyber security skills, 10 teams from Alberta, Manitoba, Ontario and New Brunswick emerged as the CyberTitan finalists.
The teams were competing for 1 championship trophy but as the 8-hour competition continued throughout the day on May 16, the complexity of the small business disaster that teams were facing and the incredible job they did defending against the vulnerabilities had the competition committee determine that there were really 2 components that the best teams should be awarded trophies and medals for – Digital Forensics Response and Vulnerability Management. With this competition shift, only the first set of winners were announced on May 16 for Digital Forensics Response, the Vulnerability Management winner were released later in the week.

First place: 0.07 – Sisler High School, Winnipeg, Manitoba
Second place: The Olympians – Old Scona Academic High School, Edmonton, Alberta
Third Place: ATC Cyber Saints – Louis Riel Arts and Technology Centre, Winnipeg, Manitoba
Top 3 teams for Vulnerability Management:
First place: 6ixside Tech – Earl Haig Secondary School, North York, Ontario
Second place: Dragons – Nashwaaksis Middle School, Fredericton, New Brunswick
Third Place: The Olympians – Old Scona Academic High School, Edmonton, Alberta

How to get involved in CyberTitan 2018
For this national learning initiative to flourish and grow next year, ICTC is calling for more students and coaches to enroll, technical mentors to help facilitate the program across Canada, and sponsors and supporters to help position Canada as leader within the global context of this competition. Also, for 2018-2019 all girl teams are free to enter. Greater female participation is a core objective of all ICTC initiatives and is key to ensuring Canada’s digital future.
